35 millones años-luz

Una espiral hermosa con un abultamiento central bien desarrollado, M66 también despliega carriles amplios de polvo. A través del disco de esta galaxia se ven muchas regiones de gas de hidrógeno caliente que es bañado por radiación de cúmulos de estrellas recién nacidas. Muy probablemente la formación de estrellas es muy activa en las regiones centrales. M66 está localizada en la constelación de Leo (el león).

A beautiful spiral with a well-developed central bulge, M66 also displays large lanes of dust. Many regions of warm hydrogen gas that are being bathed with radiation from clusters of newborn stars are seen throughout the disk of this galaxy. Very active star-formation is most likely also occurring in the central regions. M66 is located in the constellation Leo (the lion).
