El cometa Hale-Bopp fue una agradable sorpresa en 1997 principalmente para los observadores del hemisferio norte. Su paso a través del interior del Sistema Solar fue casi majestuoso y visible a simple vista por más de un año. En su mejor momento en 1997, Hale-Bopp desarrolló dos colas - la cola blanca brillante de polvo, y la cola azul compuesta de gas ionizado brillante. Hale-Bopp regresará - ¡pero será dentro de unos 2.400 años!

Comet Hale-Bopp

Comet Hale-Bopp was a treat mostly for northern hemisphere observers in 1997. Its passage through the inner solar system was relatively stately, and was visible to the naked eye for well over a year. At its peak in 1997, Hale-Bopp developed two tails - the bright white dust tail, and a blue tail made from glowing ionised gas. Hale-Bopp will come by again - just not for another 2400 years or so!
