Esta imagen es de la nebulosa California, que tiene ese nombre porque su forma nos recuerda el estado al oeste de los Estados Unidos que lleva ese nombre. Aquí el estado está reclinado: imagine que lo rota por 90 grados en la dirección de las manecillas del reloj. Xi Persei, la estrella brillante que queda justo encima, es probablemente la fuente de energía de la nebulosa. Una o más de las estrellas cercanas generan luz ultravioleta energética, que excita los electrones de los átomos de hidrógeno en esta nube inmensa.

This image is of the California Nebula is so named because the shape is reminiscent of its namesake western state in the United States. Here the state is lying down: imagine it rotated 90 degrees clockwise. Xi Persei, the bright star just above, is probably the nebula’s source of energy. One or more of the nearby stars generate energetic ultraviolet light, exciting electrons in hydrogen atoms within this vast cloud. When the electrons return to their rest state they emit the extra energy as photons, generating the deep red colour.
